Revitalising Kings Park Pool: Preserving a Legacy, Unlocking Future Opportunities

Forward Durban – Changing the Narrative

Durban’s iconic Kings Park Pool is undergoing a significant refurbishment and upgrade — not only to preserve a historic municipal asset, but to ensure it continues serving communities and attracting world-class sporting events for decades to come.

As part of ongoing efforts to responsibly manage and revitalise the City’s infrastructure, officials shared key insights into the scope, impact, and long-term vision behind the upgrades currently underway at this internationally recognised aquatic facility.

Protecting a Major City Asset Through Planned Maintenance

Kings Park Pool is a major asset of the eThekwini Municipality, and like all large public infrastructure, it requires ongoing, structured maintenance to avoid costly deterioration.

According to building standards, facilities of this scale should allocate 10–15% of their value annually for maintenance, with major refurbishments planned over long-term cycles. Following the current refurbishment, the City has committed to aligning more closely with these maintenance plans to ensure the pool remains safe, functional, and cost-effective to operate into the future.

This proactive approach marks a shift from reactive repairs to planned asset management, helping protect public investment and reduce long-term costs.

An International-Standard Facility with Local Impact

Kings Park Pool is no ordinary swimming venue. It is regarded as one of the largest international-standard pools in South Africa, having hosted numerous major national and international swimming events over the years.

Importantly, while the facility meets international specifications, it has always remained accessible to local communities. Many of Durban’s top swimmers have emerged from surrounding neighbourhoods, demonstrating the role the pool plays in developing local talent.

Schools across Durban regularly use the pool for finals and championships, while provincial and national tournaments continue to rely on the venue — reinforcing its value as both a community asset and elite sporting facility.

Emergency Repairs Spark Broader Upgrade

In May, severe winds caused damage to the pool’s roof, prompting an emergency intervention. This incident accelerated plans for refurbishment and highlighted underlying structural issues that needed urgent attention.

The emergency work focused on four critical areas:

  • Roof steel installation and replacement
  • Structural concrete repairs, including corroded steel reinforcements
  • General painting, addressing salt damage and water exposure
  • Spalling repairs, caused by long-term water ingress into the structure

At over 100 years old, the pool required more than patchwork repairs — it needed a comprehensive facelift to protect the structure and restore its appearance.

Two-Phase Construction Plan

The refurbishment has been structured into two phases:

Phase One (completion expected end of July) focuses on emergency works to stabilise the structure, prevent further damage, and ensure safety.

Phase Two, already underway, is a longer-term upgrade scheduled to run through to June next year. This phase will include:

  • Architectural and aesthetic improvements
  • Lighting upgrades to meet international lux-level standards
  • Improved media and broadcasting projection capabilities
  • Accessibility upgrades to meet compliance standards
  • Full alignment with building codes and safety regulations

These enhancements are essential for hosting international competitions and ensuring the venue remains fit for modern sporting and media requirements.

A Cornerstone of Durban’s Sporting Precinct

Kings Park Pool forms part of a broader sports and tourism precinct, located alongside major assets such as the athletics stadium, golf course, and Moses Mabhida precinct, with the Indian Ocean as its backdrop.

This unique clustering of facilities strengthens Durban’s reputation as a sporting tourism destination, enabling the City to host multi-disciplinary events that combine sport, leisure, and tourism in one location.

Its proximity to the beachfront and major transport routes further enhances its appeal to event organisers, athletes, broadcasters, and visitors alike.

Sport, Tourism, and Economic Impact

Facilities like Kings Park Pool play a critical role in attracting national and international events, which in turn drive tourism, hotel occupancy, local spending, and job creation.

By investing in maintenance, compliance, and modernisation, Durban is positioning itself to compete for high-profile aquatic events — reinforcing the City’s status as a destination capable of delivering world-class sporting experiences.

Looking Ahead

The refurbishment of Kings Park Pool is about more than fixing a roof. It represents a commitment to:

  • Preserving heritage infrastructure
  • Expanding access for communities
  • Supporting athlete development
  • Strengthening Durban’s sports tourism economy

As Durban continues to invest in its assets and precincts, projects like this demonstrate how planned maintenance, compliance, and vision can turn legacy facilities into engines of future growth.

At Forward Durban, we believe these are the stories that matter — stories of care, collaboration, and confidence in our City’s future.
