The Manufacturing Sector Action Team is working hard to build practical, scalable models that will strengthen local manufacturing in Durban. With a focus on challenges like market access, local sourcing, and workforce development, the team is moving from conversation to implementation.
Creating a Replicable Industry Support Model
At the heart of the strategy is the development of a prototype model that addresses three critical areas in the manufacturing sector:
- Access to Market
- Manufacturer Operational Challenges
- Local Sourcing of Raw Materials
Each challenge is being mapped and workshopped into a real-world solution that can be tested, refined, and scaled. A dedicated Access to Market event is being planned for mid-July 2025 to connect local manufacturers with buyers and showcase solutions in action.
Packaging Cluster & Sustainability Focus
The team is also exploring the formation of a Packaging Cluster, inviting industry players to collaborate around packaging innovation and environmental responsibility. A key aim is to develop a positive plastic solution that could serve as a model for other manufacturing sectors.
Skills Development for Manufacturing Excellence
To address the ongoing shortage of skilled labor, the team is laying the foundation for a specialised skills development entity focused on key sub-sectors like food, clothing, and medical manufacturing. Concepts include:
- Engaging retirees to impart sector knowledge
- Partnering with SETAs and QCTO to expand training
- Collaborating with platforms like iLearn to build on existing accredited programs and add custom specialisations
Vision for Manufacturing in Durban
A draft vision statement has been proposed to unite volunteers and stakeholders:
“As a movement, we believe in economics of mutuality so that All Shall Prosper. As the manufacturing sector action team based near the biggest port in Africa, we believe in being a lever for growth, facilitation of local and international trade, and a sector of excellence—so that eThekwini will be the city region of choice for investors and citizens alike.”
🔍 Tier 2 & Tier 3 Supplier Development
The team is actively identifying gaps in the supply chain for key sectors such as automotive, chemical, clothing, and agri-processing. While OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) are established in the region, there is a shortage of Tier 2 and 3 suppliers. This presents an opportunity to develop local capabilities or attract international investment into the region.
As the Change the Narrative Conference approaches on 3 June 2025, the Manufacturing Sector Action Team is preparing to showcase its progress and call for greater participation from industry players. The work underway is not only about solving current challenges—but creating long-term, sustainable growth pathways for Durban’s manufacturing sector.
