Forward Durban’s Pearl Holdstock had the pleasure of sitting down with Mrs. Sjabulile Ntuli Cebekhulu, Acting Director for Stadia, at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium to talk about one of Durban’s most exciting weekends of the year – the Toyota Cup 2025.
On Saturday, Kaizer Chiefs will take on Ghana’s Asante Kotoko SC in an international friendly that promises more than just football. This match will bring together fans, legends of the game, and vibrant African energy to Durban’s shores.
“This isn’t just a game,” Mrs. Ntuli shared, “it’s a full experience. We’ve brought in football legends, entertainment, and even a lucky draw where one fan will drive away in a brand-new Toyota!”
Why Moses Mabhida?
The stadium, built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, remains one of Durban’s crown jewels. Its multi-purpose design allows it to host cricket, rugby, concerts, athletic events, and more, all while providing an unmatched location—just 20 minutes from King Shaka International Airport and within walking distance of Durban’s golden beaches.
“Accessibility is key,” Mrs. Ntuli explained. “From taxis and trains to planes, Moses Mabhida was designed with the fan in mind. And beyond just games, we deliver an experience—seamless from arrival to departure.”
More Than Sport – A Boost for Durban’s Economy
Events like these aren’t just about entertainment—they’re economic engines. Thousands of visitors will pour into Durban for the match, filling hotels, shopping in malls, eating at local restaurants, and supporting township vendors.
“We plan every event with the community in mind,” said Mrs. Ntuli. “From SMMEs selling food and merchandise to large hospitality businesses, we make sure the economic impact is felt across the city.”
A Packed Calendar Ahead
This weekend is just the start. Golden Arrows, Amazulu FC, and newly promoted Durban CTFC will all be playing fixtures at Moses Mabhida this season. Plus, international teams from Lesotho, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe have contracted to host games here.
And it’s not just sport—concerts, lifestyle events, and even large-scale church gatherings are on the calendar. Moses Mabhida is positioning itself as a hub for sport tourism, leisure tourism, and cultural experiences, reinforcing Durban as a city that has something for everyone.
Durban: South Africa’s Playground
Durban is proving yet again why it’s known as South Africa’s playground. Between its year-round warm weather, accessible location, and iconic venues, the city is levelling up its offerings for locals and visitors alike.
“We’re not slowing down,” said Mrs. Ntuli. “Our strategy is to keep bringing the events that people want—whether you’re a football fanatic, a concert-goer, or a family looking for entertainment. Durban is the place to be.”
So, if you haven’t yet—grab your ticket. Come for the football, stay for the vibe, and you might even leave with a brand-new Toyota.
Durban is thriving. KZN is thriving. And at Moses Mabhida, the experience is just getting started.
