Celebrating Economic Growth, Culture & Collaboration
Forward Durban was honoured to be represented at the official media launch for the Hollywoodbets Durban July, Africa’s premier horse-racing and lifestyle event. Members of our Media Sector Action Team were invited to attend the occasion, with the ever-graceful Pearl Holdstock representing Forward Durban as part of this incredible experience.
Held at the new Westown Precinct in Shongweni, the event brought together city officials, industry leaders, fashion icons, and cultural changemakers in anticipation of the big race happening this weekend. Beyond the glitz, the launch highlighted the economic power, cultural influence, and collaborative opportunity this event brings to Durban.
Economic & Tourism Boost
- 45 000+ attendees expected, with Durban hotel occupancy already hitting 80%
- R278 million in direct spend and a projected R689 million GDP contribution
- 4 400+ jobs to be created during the Durban July weekend
- Significant uplift for the informal sector: food vendors, fashion designers, textile suppliers, stylists, beauty professionals, and more will benefit from the surge in visitors and activity
This kind of event shows how Durban’s creative, tourism, and retail sectors feed into broader inclusive economic development—a key focus of the Forward Durban movement.
Fashion, Culture & the Soul of the City
The Durban July is more than a horse race—it’s a celebration of South African creativity and identity, uniting thousands through fashion, food, music, and design.
This year’s theme, “Marvels of Mzansi”, sets the stage for a dazzling display of local talent—from Durban Fashion Fair Rising Stars to top designers. The energy and flair of this event contributes to Durban’s growing status as a leading global lifestyle destination.
To top it off, Durban has just won the 2025 World Travel Award for “Africa’s Premium Travel Conference Destination.”
Westown: Durban’s New Economic Node
The decision to host the launch at Westown signals a shift in the city’s development narrative. As a multi-billion-rand development node near Shongweni, Westown positions itself as a new gateway to Durban’s inland growth and tourism potential—perfectly aligned with Forward Durban’s vision of unlocking opportunity through infrastructure, innovation, and inclusion.
Collaboration Is Key
Councillors Thembo Ntuli and Xaba emphasised that the Durban July exemplifies what can be achieved when government, business, and community work together. The presence of the Forward Durban Media Sector Action Team, including Pearl Holdstock, reflects the growing network of voices coming together to amplify Durban’s good news story.
“The Durban July is a gateway to the soul of our city.” – Councillor Xaba
