Changing the Narrative: Tourism, Collaboration & Hope for Durban

Forward Durban – All Shall Prosper Movement

Durban is a city blessed with warm oceans, breathtaking natural beauty, and vibrant communities — yet it has often faced negativity and challenges that overshadow its potential. At Forward Durban, under the All Shall Prosper Movement, our mission is clear: to change the narrative and showcase our city’s strengths through collaboration, innovation, and purpose-driven action.

Tourism as a Catalyst for Growth

In a recent conversation, Andre from AS Advertising & Design, who heads up the Hospitality & Tourism Sector Action Team, shared his passion for driving sustainable tourism and creating real opportunities for economic growth.

“Tourism is exciting, but it’s also job-creating and sustainable,” he explained. “That’s why we’re working closely with Durban Tourism, KZN Tourism, and associations across the province to ensure our sector thrives.”

A highlight in the team’s current work is partnering with Midlands Meander Tourism as they celebrate their 40th anniversary this October. With five zones stretching from Hilton to Mooi River, the Midlands Meander is rich with countryside escapes, wedding venues, craft industries, and key attractions such as Howick Falls and the Nelson Mandela Capture Site. To mark the milestone, members will offer 40% accommodation discounts, encouraging visitors to stay overnight and truly experience all the region has to offer.

Strategic Partnerships & National Recognition

Andre also revealed that the team recently engaged with FEDHASA (the Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa), the country’s largest tourism body. Their response was clear: “We want to work with you.” This partnership opens doors to tackle pressing issues like homelessness in Durban while strengthening collaboration between the private sector and government.

“This isn’t about independence — it’s about interdependence,” Andre noted. “Working together is how we can provide the ultimate experience for our guests and unlock growth for our city.”

The Power of Mentorship & Encouragement

Beyond tourism, Andre is passionate about mentorship and service. He shared his belief in the value of “borrowed knowledge” — learning from the wisdom of others instead of repeating mistakes.

“Encouragement is such a powerful habit,” he reflected. “It costs nothing, but it can change a life, whether someone is in business, facing challenges, or just needs to hear they matter. That’s why mentorship is so important for our youth, especially those who’ve grown up without father figures.”

This heart for mentorship echoes Forward Durban’s commitment to uplifting people as much as industries.

An Invitation to Be Part of the Movement

Both Andre and Pearl Holdstock, who facilitated the conversation, called on Durban’s hospitality and tourism stakeholders to join the ASP Movement’s sector action teams.

“We’re only asking for a once-a-month, two-hour commitment,” Pearl explained. “It’s not just an investment of your time — it’s an opportunity to share your expertise, learn something new, and contribute to building a better Durban.”

For those outside KZN, Andre had a message of hope:
“This province has it all. We might have let you down in the past, but we’re working hard to rebuild. Our focus is on two pillars — clean and safe. These are key to winning back tourists, attracting international investors, and making Durban the city of choice again.”

Moving Forward Together

At its core, this movement is about collaboration, service, and hope. With the support of sector action teams, government partners, and dedicated leaders, Durban’s story is being rewritten.

As Andre concluded, “We’re grateful to God for opening these doors. Forward Durban isn’t just about tourism; it’s about building a city where all shall prosper.”
